Chapter 11. Treatment Planning Practices
In the planning of the metal framework on diagnostic casts, it is helpful for both the dentist and the dental technician to follow a systematic sequence—based on the principles outlined in Chapter 8—and to mark the prosthesis components in detail on the diagnostic cast and treatment planning charts. This sequence includes:
- Determining the Kennedy classification of the case
- Determining the supporting units
- Considering the necessity of guide planes
- Determining the direct retainers
- Determining the indirect retainers
- Selecting the major connector
- Outlining the minor connectors
- Determining the denture base and artificial teeth
In this section, practices illustrated according to the Kennedy classification for Class I, II, III, IV, and their modifications in both maxillary and mandibular arches will serve as a guide for the wide variety of partial edentulism cases.
The tooth numbering system, color codes of prosthesis components, and abbreviations used in the applications are shown in Figure 11.
