Preface

Dear Readers,

The main goal of a removable partial denture is to preserve the the long-term health of the remaining tissues while restoring the patient’s function, phonation, and aesthetic features. A proper diagnostic and treatment strategy can lead to a successful prosthetic restoration.

Treatment planning for removable partial dentures is inherently complex due to their dependence on tissues with differing resilience and the presence of components with distinct properties serving various functions. Typically, planning is frequently delegated to dental technicians who may lack clinical expertise. Even if laboratory technicians are assumed to have sufficient experience to propose a logical plan, the absence of a clinical perspective necessary for formulating an ideal patient-centered treatment plan makes it unlikely that a prosthesis designed solely by technicians will avoid causing trauma to the remaining oral tissues.

Although numerous authoritative books on removable partial dentures have been written by respected authors worldwide, dentists often continue to seek additional resources specifically focused on treatment planning. Moreover, the limited clinical experience that dental students gain in making removable partial dentures during their education frequently results in feelings of inadequacy and discomfort when engaging in treatment planning for their private practices.

Since its first publication in 2002, our book titled ‘Removable Partial Prostheses, Planning’ has served as a valuable resource for both our students and colleagues. The positive feedback we have received, highlighting its ability to offer a more accessible perspective on prosthesis planning—an area often regarded as complex and challenging—has inspired us to release subsequent editions. With its updates, the book has continued to be a frequently referenced textbook at the national level, up to the fourth edition. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of our readers for their continued interest in the ongoing editions of our work.

In order to create a lasting work that aligns with the characteristics of today’s student generation and contemporary learning methods, and to ensure broader accessibility to information, I decided to prepare a book titled ‘Removable Partial Denture Planning’ as an interactive e-book, available online with open access. This e-book, which is written in Turkish, has been augmented with my lectures, video visuals, and learning-supporting questions. The fact that thousands of people have read this book internationally has motivated me to translate it into English in order to reach a wider global readership.
I hope it continues to be a valuable resource for my colleagues, especially dental students, as it has been in previous editions.

With love and respect…

Prof. Dr. Funda Akaltan
